Africa's first solar powered airport operational in George

Africa's first solar-powered airport is operational. George Airport in South Africa is only the second in the world to use solar energy. The initiative is spearheaded by the country's Department of Transport and the Airports Company of South Africa. Solar panels convert solar energy into direct current electricity.

The airport has 2 thousand solar panels that generate up to 750 KiloWatts of power each day. The airport only needs 4 hundred a day. Authorities are looking to convert more airports into solar powered ones. George Airport manager Brenda Vorster welcomed the project, adding that the second phase start within the next year.
