Colorful bleaching is a recurring phenomenon in reef regions around the globe and can be indicative of brief or mild heat stress episodes or underlying nutrient stress.
The changes in coloration are caused by an optical feedback loop involving coral host and algal symbiont and involve a blue-light-driven upregulation of host pigments following bleaching.
The photoprotective host pigments in bleached tissue can aid recolonization by symbiont algae. Special credits: Richard Vevers (The Ocean Agency) and "Chasing Coral" (Netflix).
